What job do you do?
Colchester, Essex – Commecial Director / Owner of Business

How did you get into marketing/communications?

I was working as a civil engineer in the early 2000’s, and in the big crash of 2008, I got made redundant and lost everything. I made a pact to myself at that point that I would never be made redundant again, so went out looking for a career that would ensure that i was always in work.

I then came across digital marketing and pursued to get my masters to ensure that I was qualified enough to handle big accounts

What are you most proud of in your career as a marketing/communications professional?

My most proud moment is when we hit a £1m valuation within MY business just short of 2 years being in work. As a marketing agency, we help others reach their goals.

We also have just been awarded the Best Digital Marketing Agency in Essex and Best Client Service Award Essex also. These are incredible highs that we love to have as a family business.

How has marketing/communications helped the organisations you’ve worked for?

For us personally, it has been able to get our brand out. We are risk-free, if it doesn’t work then we will refund you the investment. We have only had to refund once.

Using digital channels, people can see that we are just a hard-working, honest family run business that is risk-free. This brand has allowed us to pick up a number of clients along the way, who have all been successful and stayed with us.

What challenges have you overcome on your professional journey to where you are today?

I grew up in care, then I was homeless for a number of years. This meant that my education level was pretty low, my abilities to read, write and even study effectively were pretty low.

I knew professionally I had to get to a certain education standard to be considered as a top marketer, and it took me a lot longer than most as I simply did not understand the Jargon and the content being used to describe things.

I am now a published author, with 5 books available on business and marketing. I have a very successful marketing agency and we strive to give people a chance, that maybe would not get that chance anywhere else.

Do you have any words of wisdom for someone starting out in the marketing/communications industry?

Always think backwards.

Think results first, then work back to the campaign. This way, you will never fail
