How did you get into marketing/communications?
After working as a business consultant for many years, I took time off for maternity leave and built a small business that grew. It started with my buying a classic, 1970s VW Camper. We used it for wedding car services. It proved successful, so I applied for funding and grew the fleet and diversified into branded, classic campervan hire for promotional campaigns. We represented major brands in our vinyl wrapped campervans, product sampling and offering experiential campaigns.

What are you most proud of in your career as a marketing/communications professional?

Representing one of the largest children’s toy brands in the world, and doing a national promotional tour with a branded classic campervan glitter bar. The children flocked to get their glitter makeover. My own children gave me “cool Mummy” status!
We wrapped one of our classic VW campers, turned it into a joint popup glitter bar and photobooth station, and provided brand ambassador staff and logistics and all the risk assessments.

How has marketing/communications helped the organisations you’ve worked for?
Our customised, branded campervan hire services offer a unique and engaging way to attract and enable target audiences to experience brands in an immersive way up and down the country.
We have produced KPIs by combining campervan roadshows with digital platforms such as campervan photobooths with online hashtag sharing, or integrated questionnaires.
Our clients often get media articles published as journalists are fascinated with the classic campervan set up. Indeed, our London publishing house tours are popular, as we take brands to the media!

What challenges have you overcome on your professional journey to where you are today?
One of our challenges has been to navigate the legislation. For example, there are strict regulations to transport heavy vehicles for commercial purposes.
You also have a lot of H&S regulations to gain access to certain sites – and data processing at PR events must be GDPR compliant.
Proactively understanding, communicating and adhering to these factors takes time. We have the experience, licenses, insurance, templates and experts to overcome these challenges.

Do you have any words of wisdom for someone starting out in the marketing/communications industry?
Do something that you enjoy and are passionate about. It makes the long hours and hard graft easy to justify and facilitates creativity.
