Where do you work and what job do you do?
I’m a Marketing Assistant at UNIwise ApS.

How did you get into marketing/communications?
Perhaps not the most direct of journeys, I found myself in marketing after earning a bachelor’s degree in journalism. I found during my studies, much to my chagrin, that I did not very much want to become a journalist. So, that posed the question–what did I want to pursue instead? I cared not for journalism, but I did quite enjoy the communications and digital aspects. So, marketing seemed a sensible option, incorporating my favourite sides of the course.

What are you most proud of in your career as a marketing/communications professional?
Honestly, my marketing career is still in its relative infancy, so I take pride in things that longtime marketers and PRs must find commonplace. I’m proud when I liaise with journalists, and when I tweak the website, and when I earn a backlink, and when I speak with peers from the industry. All things considered, I probably take the most pride from the fact I was able to secure a career in marketing in the first place, without a marketing degree and with little relevant experience. But I really find the industry very rewarding, with little sources of pride cropping up all the time.

How has marketing/communications helped the organisations you’ve worked for?
Striking up a dialogue with peers and with wider audiences is what brings the biggest reward. When I was in my last job, marketing for a sporting goods e-commerce company, we managed to get one of our blog posts shared on Twitter by a couple of industry opinion leaders, which was a big boost to traffic on that post. We simply struck up a dialogue with them and they did the rest. Communication with customers and peers is central to it all.

What challenges have you overcome on your professional journey to where you are today?
Sticking with my university course even though it bored the devil out of me. I’m grateful for it now, because it’s given me a lot of the skills I lean on in my current role. But it was tough.

Do you have any words of wisdom for someone starting out in the marketing/communications industry?
Yes–be patient. In marketing, change rarely comes overnight. You have to stick with it. But hard work really does tend to pay off.
