Internet Marketing Director at Regex SEO
How did you get into marketing/communications?
About 11 years ago, as a programmer, I was hired as a “PHP developer, specialized in SEO”, without me or management themselves understanding what position was about. It turned out to be straight forward SEO and marketing position. I was given 2 months to figure it out or get fired and after 6 months of sleepless nights, I was running their internet marketing department. it was then that I fell in love with marketing and have been in the industry ever since.
What are you most proud of in your career as a marketing/communications professional?
Definitely helping a new business with no capital to grow from ground zero into a multi-million company. it was lots of work, but such a satisfying feeling at the end.
How has marketing/communications helped the organisations you’ve worked for?
Each business has different priority goals in terms of marketing. For some of our clients, it is search engine rankings, for others, it’s an improvement in conversion rate. Sometimes it’s website visits, sometimes it’s brand search volume. I’ve seen every type of goal being achieved (and sometimes not), but the most interesting part is when the whole business learns something they didn’t know about themselves through the results of marketing.
What challenges have you overcome on your professional journey to where you are today?
From being given an ultimatum to “figure out marketing in 2 months”, to pulling straight 48-hour shifts to launch campaigns for giant corporations. Every day is a challenge in some way, but it’s all worth it when a campaign outperforms all expectations.
Do you have any words of wisdom for someone starting out in the marketing/communications industry?
Surround yourself with the best resources – books, videos, podcasts, people. Learn, learn, learn. Put yourself out of your comfort zone, test new things when you can. And most importantly, enjoy what you do.
