How did you get into marketing/communications?
I’ve been making websites for over 19 years so got into marketing and comms that way. As e-commerce became more prevalent and an online presence was more and more important, I started to realise that I was creating communication and marketing platforms more that anything else.

What are you most proud of in your career as a marketing/communications professional?
I’m most proud of the work I’m doing at the moment. Whilst there have been some challenges, it has been really great to have a clear focus and to have a specific vision to work towards. Even when I’ve had to change and adapt, I’ve done this knowing it was the right thing to do. Knowing what I am aiming for and why has really helped with communication and marketing.

How has marketing/communications helped the organisations you’ve worked for?
This is a very difficult question to answer but I’m confident the opposite is true! The organisations I’ve worked in which have stepped away from marketing and comms have become more isolated and have struggled to get the traction they want both internally and externally. Effective marketing and communications can help to bring communities together and one place this is overlooked in a lot of businesses is internally. Often it is felt that staff already know or they don’t need the same messages as customers but usually the opposite is true; engaged staff will engage customers but it rarely works the other way.

What challenges have you overcome on your professional journey to where you are today?
One of the biggest challenges I’ve faced on my professional journey is lack of recognition of my skills and abilities. I have found it hard, especially as a junior member of a team, to gain recognition for the skills I bring to the role. Often this has meant that I have been excluded from meetings or projects because people simply presumed I didn’t have any expertise in that area. One of the reasons we started Branswer was to help free up time for busy comms and marketing professionals so that they can focus on some of the bigger issues.

Do you have any words of wisdom for someone starting out in the marketing/communications industry?
Don’t be scared to fail and don’t forget to learn. I have seen people step away from their campaign because they were waiting for the perfect message but didn’t know how to write it. My advice is to just try! If you’re not getting the results you expected, learn from it, try to work out why and tweak your campaign. It is always the right time to learn more about your audience.

Lastly, where can we find you online?
